Type 2 diabetes is an important medical condition associated with serious mental illness. The authors studied the disease-specific knowledge about diabetes in a sample of 201 psychiatric outpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or major mood disorders, all of whom had type 2 diabetes. In a multivariate analysis, disease-specific diabetes knowledge was associated with higher cognitive functioning, a higher level of education, and recent receipt of diabetes education. Disease-specific diabetes knowledge predicted lower levels of perceived barriers to diabetes care...

Type 2 diabetes is a polygenic disease that can lead to severe complications in multiple tissues. Rodent models have been used widely for investigating the pathophysiology underlying type 2 diabetes and for examining the potential link with obesity, largely due to the limitations of invasive testing and of studying detailed molecular mechanisms in human tissues...

Molecular Approaches to Study Control of Glucose Homeostasis
Type 2 diabetes is a prototypical complex systems disease that has etiologic links with a sedentary lifestyle, overeating, and obesity, and a strong hereditary component. Adipose tissue has been shown to be a central driver of type 2 diabetes progression, establishing and maintaining a chronic state of low-level inflammation. The number and diversity of identified endocrine factors from adipose tissue (adipokines) is growing rapidly...
