This paper discusses the reasons that frequently lead electrical utilities to issue specifications with above- standard requirements relative to the interruption of line - charging currents by HV and EHV circuit breakers. It shows by means of examples, digital simulations and a discussion of the withstand capabilities of modern breakers that these special requirements are many times unjustified and often determine price increases of which proportions the buyers are generally unaware.
