Kepekatan logam berat didapati lebih rendah dari nilai purata enapcemar yang biasa dilaporkan di USA. Abstract. It is necessary to carry out preliminary characterisation tests before considering sludge disposal options since sewage sludges exhibit wide variations in their physical, chemical and biological properties. This paper reports the analysis of sewage sludge characteristics with respect to its suitability for land application. The parameters investigated were pH, total solids content, volatile solids, BOD5, COD, nutrients (total kjeldahl nitrogen, phosphorus & potassium), fecal coliform, ascaris ova and some selected metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn & Cr). Samples were collected from the secondary sludge settling tank at the Regional Sewage Treatment Plant in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur which employs an extended aeration treatment system. The results for pH show that the sludge was slightly below neutral for all samples. Total solids values ranged from 0.8% to 1.57% solid in which the volatile solids contents were from 16.5% to 30.9%. The BOD5 values were quite high indicating the present of much biodegradable organic matter. It was interesting to note that the COD:BOD5 ratio of the sludge samples which ranged from 18 to 30. Total colonies of coliform were 6.8 x 10 6 /100 ml and 9.3 x 10 6 /100 ml while ascaris ova were non detectable. The results indicated relative consistency in the concentration of N-P-K which were also lower than the normal range expected from similar sludge as well as commercial fertilizer. The concentration of the heavy metals in the sludge samples were much lower than those reported to be normally present for similar sludges in the USA.
