Most of the mangrove areas from Rio de Janeiro coast were severely depleted through the twentieth century. Guapimirim Environmental Protected Area is the last representative mangrove part from the eastern edge of Guanabara bay. A multitemporal analysis of this fragment of mangrove forest was performed using bands 3, 4 and 5 from two TM/LANDSAT5 images from 1996 and 2007. Pre-processing techniques for geo- referencing and atmospheric correction were employed, along with digital processing protocols and Boolean operations. Image segmentation and classification yielded two thematic maps with three different classes of mangrove cover: dense mangrove, dense flooded mangrove and sparse mangrove. Both maps were compared through boolean operations, and the resulting classes were employed in a change/non-change thematic map. Finally, the respective areas in km² of all mangrove classes were calculated, as well as the increase or decrease of each mangrove class for the 11 year gap. Several small sparse vegetation areas that were observed in the thematic map of 1996, were not present in the 2007 map. This result was corroborated by a comparison between area sizes on both dates, which also pointed to an increase of dense mangrove (4,2km², including dense and dense flooded areas), and a reduction of sparse mangrove areas (-3,8km²).
