Profissional. ABSTRACT: Historically, nursing has been establishing itself as a profession since the beginning of humanity, related as it is to the care of the sick. However, it was only in the nineteenth century, with Florence Nightingale, that it achieved its professional characteristics based on scientific knowledge. Florence incorporated into the profession the concepts of abnegation, dedication, moral perfection, asexuality and a strict discipline derived from military patterns. This process was parallel to the emergence of hospitals as places for healing and the studying of illnesses, which led to the subordination of nursing to medicine, as a continuation of the latter, obstructing the fact that each had a distinct historical origin. In Brazil, the Sanitary Reform, which began in the Seventies, opened way for the actuation of the nurse in the collective health in which area, supported by the Ministry of Health, this professional had room to develop his autonomy, detaching himself from physician-centered activity. Starting from the pertinent legislation and the theoretical debate on the concept of autonomy, this work intends to determine whether or not this autonomy really exists. This collation was done concerning four female nurses on the Family Health Program in Londrina, State of Paraná, who took part in the survey by filling out an instrument in which they described their daily activities over
