An experimental study on fracture toughness is presented in two different kinds of polished Spanish porcelain stoneware tiles in this paper. Microindentation techniques were used to determine fracture toughness, with the presence of Plamqvist cracks. Analitycal models with hardness and fracture toughness allowed us to know abrasive wear resistance. A statistical study has been carried out, analysing mean values and standard deviation of all the mechanical properties which were calculated. Fracture toughness was adjusted to a Weibull distribution in both types of the studied ceramics and it was possible to observe how this distribution fits well to describe and to model fracture toughness in porcelain stoneware tiles. Bimodal tendencies were observed in one of the families studied when adjusting with Weibull distribution, and their meaning have been analysed.
