Study of Mapping Deformation Caused by Earthquake in Iran Using Envisat Data (Introductory to the research in Indonesia). Many serious changes on the earth are often the consequence of natural hazards. Earthquakes are considered as the deadliest and most destructive hazard, affecting mainly urban areas. The detection, mapping and assessment of earthquake-related urban damage are critical, especially in remote or inaccessible areas. Spaceborne satellite data are obtained without the necessity of accessing a location and are able to cover large areas. Consequently, information extracted from these data is valuable on post-earthquake urban damage assessment. In this research, the capacity of interferometric SAR data for detecting urban damages has been studied. Likewise, properties like interferometric complex coherence, intensity and intensity correlation seem to have an important sensitivity to changes in ground surface and urban damage. Through image co-registration, these properties were calculated and mapped using several software tools. A series of Envisat SAR images acquired at different dates before and after the 2003 Bam earthquake were used in this study. Moreover, current methods on post-earthquake urban damage assessment using these types of remotely-sensed data were studied with the purpose of understanding and proving both their actual potentials and limitations. However, this research has shown that a rough estimate of earthquake-induced urban damage patterns can be obtained by using SAR data, in particular intensity and phase coherence information. This process of this research is going to be used for the research in Indonesia using Envisat data. The area is Aceh province, with the availability data before and after the earthquake and tsunami.
