In the early 20th century, a man with a dream revolutionized the manufacturing industry across the world. That man was Henry Ford and his dream was to sell as many cars as he could. Like most other industries of the day, automobiles were built from start to finish by a team of skilled craftsman, making them very expensive and unaffordable to most. To combat this problem, Mr. Ford adopted a method of production in which, instead of having a craftsman skilled in many tasks, they were skilled in only one which they performed over and over. What Mr. Ford implemented was the assembly line production method and his success created the mold on how factories should operate. Though many know of Mr. Ford's story, most are unaware of the contributions of the several other individuals that helped refine and develop the assembly line production method. Today, the assembly line is still one of the best approaches to large scale manufacturing. Although the concept remains virtually unchanged from the time of its inception a century ago, the technologies being employed are rapidly changing. This is very evident when looking at the industries of auto-manufacturing and electronics manufacturing. Today's auto-manufacturers, like Toyota and BMW, have transformed the assembly line by making use of automated carts that quickly ferry parts to work stations and electronic identification systems that override the traditional vehicle history card. Perhaps the biggest technological advancement to the assembly line employed in any industry is the utilization of robots. This is especially apparent in the electronics industry, where ever shrinking products are calling for increasing stringent production standards. These technologies will be further discussed as well as their usage in other industries beyond automotive manufacturers.
