Introduction: The L1 capsid protein of HPV, expressed in recombinant systems, self-assembled into virus-like capsids (VLPs). These VLPs have the ability to package irrelevant plasmidic ADN. The pseudovirions obtained have the capacity to transfer the plasmidic ADN into epithelial cells (pseudoinfection), where the reporter gene is expressed. Objetive: In this study our purpose was to analyze the presence of NAbs (neutralizing antibodies) in human sera by using an assay based on the capacity of these antibodies to inhibit VLP-mediated gene transfer. Methods: The presence of NAbs was studied in 30 serum samples from woman with normal cytology report, 31 women with cervical carcinoma, the viral status and the presence of VLPs antibodies being known. Forty-five sera from children were also included. Results: NAbs were not detected in children nor in women negative for HPV DNA and antibodies to VLPs. Women positive for antibodies to VLP but negative for HPV ADN, who could be considered as individuals that cleared viral infection, were also negative. An important proportion of women with cervical cancer presented NAbs.
