CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AND MICROSTRUCTURE OF AlFeNi INTERMETALLIC ALLOY AS FUEL CLADDING MATERIAL. The AlFeNi alloy for cladding material was used to contain research reactor fuel. The alloying of AlFeNi was performed employing fusion method in arc furnace. The analysis of the mechanical properties of AlFeNi was carried out using Vickers method. The microstructure observation was performed by optical metallography. The analysis of grain size utilized DASS method. The phase analysis was done based on microstructure topography, X-ray diffraction pattern and equilibrium phase diagram. The hardness measurement results of AlFeNi alloys with 1%, 1,5 %, and 2,5%Fe were subsequently 36,3; 39,3; and 57,7 HV. The hardness of AlFeNi alloy showed improvement with the increase of Fe content in the alloy. Optical metallographic observation result indicated that the grain structure was dendritic in form and tended to change with increasing Fe content in the alloy. The grain microstructure of AlFeNi alloy with 2,5%Fe−0,5%Ni showed grain structure of long dendritic form , which was identified as κ and τ phases. The formation of κ and τ phases in AlFeNi alloy had a tendency to increase with increasing Fe content. The grain structure analysis indicated that the dendrite grain structure increased up to 18,6 μm at 2,5% Fe. FREE TERMS: AlFeNi alloy, Cladding, DASS, Optical metallography, Microstructure
