The present study was carried out with the intention to evaluated the quantity and biological quality of the seeds contained in the fruits of 20 families (trees) of big leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King- Meliaceae) located in a plantation in the state of Campeche, Mexico. 10 fruits were collected at random by family from which the following characteristics were evaluated: 1) number of developed seeds; 2) number of underdeveloped seeds; 3) potential of production of seeds; 4) efficiency of production of seeds; 5) percentage of germination and 6) efficiency of production of viable seeds. The results showed the existence of significant differences among families only for the variables 1 and 3 at the level of 0.05 of probability. The number of developed seeds was from 10 to 71 for fruit, with a general average of 47.5 and a coefficient of variation of 20.23%. The potential of production of seeds was from 54 to 89% for fruit, with a general average of 65.7% and a coefficient of variation of 9.29%.
