Based on a survey of 289 faculty members employed at least 30 hours each week at a public institution of higher education in northwestern Mexico, an analysis was completed of the respondents' opinions of their perceived influence on the decisions made by the central administration, the academic units, and by faculty members themselves. The faculty members surveyed assign institutional decisions to the central administration and local matters to the academic units, but consider themselves to have little weight or personal influence on the unit and institution; they view the authorities as autocratic and show dissatisfaction with faculty participation. These results are independent of gender and academic degree, but show differences in the type of unit and disciplinary area; thus, faculty members
