Water treatment is divided into several phases, one of them is the clarification which consists in removing colloidal particles from water by coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation. Aluminum salts, such as aluminum sulfate, are conventional chemicals used for clarification. Nevertheless, high quantities of these salts are required, thus, producing high concentrations of residual aluminum in the clarified water. This high concentration of alumi- num seems to favor certain neurological disorders. For this reason, more effective substitutes for aluminum salts used in clarification need to be developed. In this research, the synthesis of four aluminum polymers type (Al13O4 (OH)24(H2O)12) 7+ at different pH is performed. The most efficient floculant was selected by jar tests and compared against conventional aluminum sulfate. The appropriate flocculant dosage is also established. The inorganic poly- mer effects on color, turbidity, pH and residual aluminum of the clarified water are assessed. Synthesis of the polymer at pH 4.50 and dosage from 25 to 45 ppm, allowed an efficient clarification of water in a local treatment plant. Residual aluminum concentration turned out to be lower than the ones observed for aluminum sulfate.
