Ubiquitous computing is steadily transforming from fiction to reality with more and more computers being omnipresent in everydays and everyones life. With the increasing application of computing appliances for previously unimaginable tasks raises the confrontation of unprepared human users with computers in ever more unprecedented situations. This relation calls for improved human-computer interfaces in order to replace traditional keyboard and pointing devices whenever possible. The VRIO appliance described in this paper addresses this problem in Virtual Reality environments by integrating speech processing capabilities for controlling applications. With VRIO, users can control Virtual Real-ity applications using natural voice commands within the CAVE. The application of VRIO underlines not only the feasibility of the idea, but also demonstrates its usefulness as a practical interface between human being and computer system. By translating the technique of VRIO from the self-contained vir-tual world into the area of ubiquitous and pervasive systems, some novel ideas of interactive system control are emerging, and many future benefits are imaginable.
