ABSTRACT This article considers the situation regarding rural-urban migration within Ghana, suggesting, that migration, has the effect of precipitating major social and behav- ioural change. The nature of Ghanaian urbanisation is examined, together with the motivational, factors that cause many,to leave their rural homes. A distinction is made, between, those "committed, urbanites" who, readily adaptto urban life and the "situational urbanites" who, experience, greater problems,in adjustment,to the city. Following this discussion certain policy implications are then examined, including that of fertility control, models of development andprotection of the status of the rural communities,in the face of a 'brain drain' to urban areas.
