Indian Software industry has set up huge growth targets for future and is growing at a phenomenal rate. These targets would be heavily affected by the Software Engineering (SE) education and research scenario in India. Although Indian educational institutions are expanding efforts to increase the number of software engineering graduates, but the rate of production is not keeping up with demand. A booming growth in the number of technical institutions has led to particularly acute issues and concerns for SE sector, where colleges are struggling to hire adequately qualified faculty, SE graduates are failing to find employment, low quality and quantity of SE research and regulators are under pressure to improve standards. This paper will take a closer look at the challenges confronting the Indian Software engineering education and research sector. Most of the findings present in this paper are based on Survey and Interviews with Software Engineers as well as Senior Executives of many major Software Companies, SE Faculty Members, SE Research scholars, SE students in India ; our observations of the ongoing SE education & research scenario for a couple of years and our experience as Software engineering faculty members. Various suggestions and recommendations made in this paper if implemented properly will go a long way in improving the quality of SE education and research in India.
