This research shows how an efficiency measurement tool, known as Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), is applied to the assessment of not-for-profit organizations. It includes an efficiency evaluation of 120 credit union type cooperatives, from the period from 1997 to 2001. A modification of the BCC model was used to analyze DMUs with negative data and an efficiency score was built which accounts for radial (technical) and mix inefficiency, simultaneously. Some statistical tests were made to check for significant differences between the average efficiency scores of the group for each year and for the frontier shifts. A logistic regression was used to verify if some factors influenced the efficiency scores obtained by each DMU. Finally, the returns to scale type of each organization was determined through DEA.
