s particles are linear combi- nations of the two mass eigenstates with masses mH and mL and a mass difference ofms. Transitions between the two flavor eigenstates are allowed due to non-conservation of flavor in weak-current inter- actions and will occur with a frequency proportional toms. Together with the mass differencemd of the B0 d system, which has already been measured with high accuracy (�md = 0.502±0.007ps 1(1)), the mea- surement ofms is an important ingredient for the precise determination of the side |Vtd| of the CKM uni- tarity triangle. The direct determination of Vtd and Vts frommd andms is hampered by hadronic un- certainties. These uncertainties partially cancel in the ratio of mass differences
