The diffusion coefficient D(M. Mm) of deuterated polyethylene fractions of M.W. = M in polyethylene melts of M.W. = Mm, has been measured as a function of Mm. The results show D(M, Mm) to be essentially independent of Mm for Mm > 2–3Mc, Mc being the critical M.W. for onset of ‘entangled’ behaviour. This result supports the suggestion that in entangled melts molecules diffuse through effectively fixed surroundings.
