The high-powered holmium laser to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia
Since 1994, the high-powered holmium laser has been used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia with various techniques. The
current technique of holmium laser enucleation of the prostate is a true surgical enucleation of the adenoma, as evidenced
by prostate-specific antigen data, pathologic tissue weight, and urodynamic parameters compared with transurethral resection
of the prostate and, more importantly, open prostatectomy. The current evidence base for this procedure consists of eight
randomized trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and data on many patient subsets. Recently, this procedure’s durability
beyond 6 years has been confirmed.
