    • ...AED CombinationsIn only 60% of epilepsy patients, monotherapy is sufficient to obtain adequate seizure control. About 40% of patients require treatment with more than 1 AED. Although the individual compounds have been amply tested for teratogenic effects in animal models before a license for human use is accorded, this is not the case for the various combinations of AEDs. Therefore observational studies are of great importance to evaluate the safety of AED combinations. A number of studies demonstrated increased risks of major congenital malformations after the exposure to AED combinations.
