In an effort to minimize per-subscriber cost for broadband customer access networks, their topologies are considered in the overall design of the broadband networks. This paper examines three different service scenarios and describes four general network architectures for broadband customer access network. We finds that an active double star network is most suitable for a business area, while a passive double star network is for an urbanised residential area. The service requirements of a newly developed residential area can be satisfied by either an optical bus or a self-healing ring network
