Home private optical fiber network: Bus topology with multi-channel Aloha and Slotted Aloha schemes

Advances in optical fiber technology have allowed several packets transmission simultaneously in the same fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). An efficient Media Access Control (MAC) protocol is important for future home private WDM optical fiber network, which provides high data rate services to large amount of device. The advantages of multi-channels Aloha and Slotted Aloha scheme are simple structure and low cost. Moreover, optical fiber provides large amount of bandwidth which is far larger than device requirement. In this article, Aloha and Slotted Aloha schemes are proposed for home private optical fiber bus network. Reasons are provided for choosing bus topology instead of star topology and against Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) as the MAC scheme. Maintaining the collision probability below “Threshold collision probability” is an effective way of ensuring satisfactory performance.
