This paper presents a practical method for extracting the S-parameters of a transition from a coupled microstrip line to a rectangular waveguide. By utilizing three standards (load, reflect, delayed reflect) for the waveguide port, the S-parameters (in both differential and common modes) of the transition can be calculated. A wide-band transition was tested to validate the calculation, and the results were in good agreement with expectations. This method is generic in the sense that it is suitable for other kinds of transitions, for instance, coplanar waveguide to waveguide, or coaxial line to waveguide, etc. In this paper, a practical measurement method that solves the above problems is presented. The basic principle of the method is to determine the two-port S- parameters from a one-port measurement. The transition can be treated as a 2-port device: one port is a waveguide port, and the other one is a coupled microstrip line port. The coupled microstrip line port has a differential mode and a common mode. The transition is measured three times at the coupled microstrip line port with three standardsload, reflect, delayed reflect (LRdR) � for the waveguide port. With the measured reflection coefficients of these three standards the S-parameters of a single transition can be calculated either for the differential mode or the common mode. The next section describes the theoretical background of the method and provides the closed-form formulas. In Section ���, we present measurements of a transition from a coupled microstrip line to a rectangular waveguide we fabricated to verify the method. The results calculated on the basis of the measurements are in close agreement with our expectations. Finally, some general conclusions are discussed.
