Realizing user interfaces for applications running in different environments or on different platforms is a difficult and time consuming task. It often requires individual implementations for each environment. User interface description languages (UIDLs) provide a general solution for this problem, but typically lack support for 3D user interfaces and especially Mixed Reality user interfaces. On the other hand such user interfaces are the most challenging for the developer as the interaction techniques are more complex and a variety of devices exists. In this paper we will introduce MRIML - the Mixed Reality Interface Markup Language - extending UIDLs to support VR and AR user interfaces. Beside the presentation of its fundamental elements we will show, how MRIML was used to realize the interface of a sample application and discuss possible future mechanisms of Mixed Reality UIDLs.
