The
cognitive process
is an effective basis for using electronic means to aid students in improving their writing. This paper presents a practical example of an e-based writing tutorial, and an analysis of the tutor's remarks and of the student's response as evidenced in a second draft of the essay, in which improvements were already evident. The paper concludes with a brief assessment of the potential value of online writing tutoring in South Africa, suggesting that it could relieve the pressure on educators in higher institutions, and be as effective as face-to-face tutoring for students who require help with their writing.
