This paper details a simulation intended to explore the viability of storage systems where data is placed in- telligently depending on data-specic
quality of service
requirements and the characteristics of the underlying storage devices. Our implementation provides a frame- work for the automatic proling of a virtualised storage system, specication of data-level
quality of service
re- quirements, simulation of data streams acting on the
storage system
and visualisation of the results. We demonstrate that an intelligent
data placement
algo- rithm can achieve a good match between desired and oered
storage system
quality of service.
