The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that lameness incidence in lactating dairy cows de- creases milk production compared with controls and to determine the best method of the 5 combinations of 2 study designs (retrospective cohort and retrospective matched cohort) and 3 repeated measures statistical methods: ANOVA (with binary classification of lame- ness); ANOVA with a lameness index (LAMIX) as the variable of interest; and analysis of covariance (AN- COVA, controlling for mean milk production for the first 3 wk of lactation and with a binary classification of lameness). Data were from 1 dairy farm located near Ithaca,NY,andfromcowsthatcalvedbetweenJanuary
